Bainbridge Township Permeable Pavers

Stone beneath the permeable pavement stores

water and allows it to soak into the ground.

Centerville Mills Park Permeable Pavers

In the summer of 2016, Bainbridge Township replaced a portion of the parking lot at Centerville Mills Park with permeable pavers. The permeable pavers clean and cool the water that runs over the parking lot during rainstorms. The water from this parking lot flows into a small stream that is a tributary to Smith Creek, the larger stream that flows through Centerville Mills Park. Water flows from Smith Creek to the Aurora Branch of the Chagrin River and eventually to Lake Erie. It is important that the water is cool before it reaches Smith Creek because Smith Creek and the Aurora Branch of the Chagrin River are coldwater habitat streams that are home to aquatic life such as redside dace that cannot tolerate warm water.  As water travels over conventional pavement and rooftops, it gets hot enough to hurt the organisms in coldwater habitat streams. Using technology that mimics natural landscapes and allows water to soak into the ground helps to protect these sensitive aquatic organisms.

Bainbridge Township received a 319 grant from Ohio EPA to partially fund this stormwater retrofit demonstration project.  CRWP assisted the Township with project grant writing and administration.

This project was financed in part or totally through a grant from the State of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, under the provisions of Section 319(h) of the Clean Water Act.
